Filoli Garden House Tree with Tulips

Here's a different kind of painting for me. I saw this tree in a beautiful little garden house at Filoli in Woodside, CA. It captured my imagination and I just had to paint it. In front of the other window in this house was a very large birdcage with two doves in it (a subject for a matching painting to come.) Last year I thought I'd enter them both into a juried art show at Filoli. I planned early and started it well ahead of time. However, it turned out that they changed the subject of the art show to botanical flower paintings! Mine is more fanciful and not as realistic as they may want for a botanical painting, but I may just enter it anyway. What do you think?

  1. I bet you are not the only one who that happened to. I would enter it anyway, because that's what you did it for, it is good exposure, and it is fun. I just entered a show for spiritual art, and even though I knew they were a little more interested in spiritual modern art (mine isn't really modern) I entered anyway. I did not place, and wasn't too surprised. But it is a good place to be in a show, so I am glad I did it. It is always interesting to find out what gets submitted to a show...and juried in, too. Then, have a plan B to enter your work in, in case they decide it is not "botanical" enough. But I think all artwork needs a job. :) Jill

  3. Well, I did it! This week I entered this painting and The Yellow Rose of Filoli into the juried Botanical Art show at Filoli. I'll find out at the end of May if I'm in. I'll let you know one way or the other... This time just the entering is an accomplishment for me, so I'm already a winner.

  4. AH... Funny how things work out sometimes. I didn't get accepted into the show for this since it wasn't a botanical painting. But I framed it and hung it at the Gallery. It didn't sell there, but it did just sell at the Garden Party Gallery show this last Sunday! Thank the Lord. Here's a lesson in perserverance from Him to me.
I thought it would be too specific a painting for people to buy it. I was wrong and this time I'm happy about it!
